BACOLOD CITY ,Philippines – There are 82 barangays in Negros Occidental that are prone to landslides, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) regional director Leo Van Juguan said at a forum Thursday.
Van Juguan added of the 662 barangays of the 32 towns and cities of Negros Occidnetal, there are 557 barangays that are flood-prone.
The forum, organized by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), briefed Negros mayors on the province’s geohazard map to ensure they will have disaster management and mitigation programs in place to reduce loss of lives and properties to natural disasters.
Negros island is still experiencing aftershocks since a magnitude 6.9 quake hit Negros Oriental last Feb. 6, leaving more than 50 people dead.
