Ilocos Sur wins LGU poverty reduction award
MANILA, Philippines - Ilocos Sur once again proved its leadership in the poverty reduction campaign as it was adjudged the 2008 Outstanding Local Government Unit Poverty Reduction Program Implementer for Region 1.
It was the third time the province got the prestigious award, having previously won it in 2004 and 2007.
Ilocos Sur Gov. Deogracias Victor Savellano personally received the award from National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) Assistant Secretary Catherine Mae Santos in ceremonies held in Vigan City.
Savellano attributed the success of their poverty mitigation campaign to various programs like Prosperity, Kabsat, Kalahi and Siglat, which the provincial government has designed.
The programs proved effective in the reduction in the number of families living below the poverty line from 8,250 to 7,095 based on the Minimum Basic Needs survey conducted on fourth- to sixth-class municipalities of Ilocos Sur, most of which are upland towns.
The provincial government spent more than P26 million in 2007 and more than P33 million in 2008 for these programs.
“We are committed to continue our poverty reduction efforts. Fulfilling it is what we can best offer to our beloved constituents.” Savellano said.
