Mayon emits crater glow

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Mayon Volcano emitted an intense crater glow visible even to the naked eye until early yesterday morning, but government volcanologists said the abnormal behavior is not enough reason to elevate the volcano’s present alert level 1 to 2.

Alex Baloloy, resident volcanologist at the Lignon Hill observatory here, said, “We have yet to observe intensification in other abnormal parameters such as volcanic quakes, sulfur dioxide emission, and ground deformation.”

At least 17 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin. – Cet Dematera
