Anti-illegal logging drive pushed

An intensive campaign against illegal logging is now being conducted in Nasugbu, Batangas by the town’s local government unit, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Calaca and the Philippine Air Force.

The campaign is being undertaken in the light of intelligence reports that illegal logging activities are rampant in the area as local residents depend on it as a means of livelihood.

During a recent operation spearheaded by the Nasugbu LGU, DENR Calaca agents and soldiers from the PAF 733rd Combat Squadron, Dungon logs from illegal logging activities in the mountainous area of Sitios Bordon and Fronda in Barangay Papaya were confiscated.

Approximately 775 board feet of Dungon logs were seized from the said sites during the two-day operation. Dungon timber is commonly used by locals for construction and shipbuilding.

The joint operation was spearheaded by Forest Ranger Arman Hayag and 1st Lt. Joseph Domingo. The retrieval of Dungon flitches were effectively conducted through intelligence reports and information given by concerned citizens in the community. Government authorities and title owners are vigilantly monitoring and protecting these areas.

The confiscated logs were impounded at the Calayo Air Force Headquarters.

Cenro-Calaca has launched a major investigation on the ownership of the seized logs.
