Inmate shot dead in Laguna jailbreak

STA. CRUZ, Laguna — An inmate was killed after he and five others bolted the Laguna provincial jail here early yesterday morning.

Three of the escapees were recaptured, while two remained at large as of press time.

Nano Casal, 51, a suspected cattle rustler and resident of Mabitac, Laguna, was shot by a jailguard while he and the five other inmates were scaling the jail’s perimeter wall at about 4 a.m., according to Raymond Tantoco, officer-in-charge of the provincial jail.

Recaptured were Marvin Delabin, 17, a car theft suspect; and robbery suspects Raffy Alcantara, 19, and Jefferson Lelina, 18.

Still at large are suspected drug pusher Joseph Caranzo and suspected kidnap-for-ransom gang member Jayson Timbal.

Chief Inspector Ramon Gabat, this town’s police chief, said the six inmates were able to escape by sawing the steel bars of their cell. – Rene Alviar
