GSIS to deploy subsidy for college STEM students

MANILA, Philippines — The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will roll out a new subsidy program providing P15,000 per academic year to eligible students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses.

In a statement, the GSIS said the program is open to incoming first-time college freshmen who secured at least a 90 percent general weighted average in Senior High School and are enrolled in identified STEM degree programs.

The GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program (GSSP) will be available to children of active members with permanent employment status, Salary Grade 15 and below and updated premium payments for the last three months.

The insurer said about 1,000 slots have been allotted, with 20 percent set aside for applicants from special sectors, including indigenous peoples, solo parent families, persons with disabilities and other qualified groups.

“Through the GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program, we aim to help the children of our members reach their dreams and become the next generation of scientists, engineers, technologists and innovators who will contribute to the development of the Philippines,” GSIS president and general manager Wick Veloso said.

To ensure seamless rollout, GSIS will hold a nationwide orientation for its assigned coordinators, detailing program guidelines, eligibility requirements, application procedures and the selection process.

This program supports President Marcos’ call to expand access to quality education and develop a future-ready Filipino workforce through investments in learning and skills development.
