Fire hits Pasig building

MANILA, Philippines - A fire hit the basement of a high-rise building being constructed in Pasig City yesterday.

Nobody was injured in the fire that reached the fourth alarm, Senior Superintendent Samuel Tadeo, chief of the Pasig Bureau of Fire Protection, said.

Tadeo said the fire started at the basement of the Avant Garden building located at the corner of J. Vargas and Meralco Avenue in Ortigas Center at 1:38 p.m.

Several explosions were heard from the basement, which arson probers said was being used as storage for liquefied petroleum gas tanks, acetylene and paint.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
