MANILA, Philippines - A 63-year-old Australian was robbed and killed in his spa in Ermita, Manila yesterday.
Harry John Felipe McKenzie’s body was found on a couch in the Yin Yang spa’s living room by a vendor at about 9:45 a.m.
His head was bleeding, his feet were tied, and his mouth was gagged.
McKenzie also had bruises all over his body, which police said were signs of struggle. He lost several pieces of jewelry, a cell phone and an undetermined amount of money.
His suspected killer, Aaron Balagtas, and his still unidentified accomplice remain free, Inspector Steve Casimiro said.
McKenzie hired Balagtas – who has been arrested for robbery in Manila and neighboring cities – to renovate Yin Yang, particularly its sauna room. Casimiro said McKenzie might not have been aware of Balagtas’ record.
He said Balagtas used to go to Yin Yang at 5 a.m. every day for the renovation because the shop operates from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
A length of wood with bloodstains on it was found in the shop. Investigators believe the wood may have been used to hit McKenzie on the head, Casimiro said.
