MANILA, Philippines - Three janitors were brought to the Pasay City police station yesterday by security guards of a mall for allegedly taking P100 worth of coins from the mall’s “wishing” fountain.
Jorge Devina and two other janitors had turned over to the guards a bucket full of coins after cleaning the fountain and set aside some coins for themselves.
“We just want to buy bread for our snacks,” he told The STAR. Mall security guards refused to be interviewed.
Devina said they regularly clean the fountain every two months and in the process they collect coins thrown by people wishing for good luck.
He said the coins are turned over to the security guards but no receipt or accounting is done for the “coins in the fountain.”
