2 carjack suspects killed in Tondo shootout

MANILA, Philippines - Two suspected carjack gang members were killed in an alleged shootout with Manila policemen past midnight yesterday in Tondo, Manila.

Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo who heads the homicide section of the Manila Police District identified the slain suspects as Enrique Chan, alias Iking, 43, and an alias “Nognog,” described as dark-complexioned man between 35 and 40 years old and at least 5’5” tall. Two loaded .38 caliber revolvers were recovered from their possession.

Police said the two suspects allegedly stole motorcycles in Metro Manila and helped in the proliferation of fake currencies.

Investigation showed that shortly before the shooting, operatives from the Moriones police station received a tip that the two suspects were about to pull another heist in Tondo.

Chief Inspector Arnulfo Ibañez, SPO1 Christopher Llanes and POs3 Marbajin Alihuddin and Herbert Salazar set up a dragnet along Jose Abad Santos street in Tondo. Several minutes later, the policemen spotted two suspects riding in tandem on a Sym-Euro motorcycle (MC-8847PI) matching the description furnished by the informant.

The policemen ordered the two suspects to stop, but the two men shot at them, triggering a shootout. When the smoke cleared, the two suspects lay dead on the street near their motorcycle.

Margarejo lamented the failure of the policemen involved in the shootout to appear for investigation.
