Water supply fully restored

Water supply was fully restored yesterday morning in areas affected by a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) construction mishap over the weekend, a ranking MMDA official said yesterday.

"Maynilad (Water Services Inc.) worked overtime to fix the busted water pipe," MMDA Deputy Chairman Cesar Lacuna said.

Lacuna said complete pressure was expected to be restored by 5 p.m. last night, because Maynilad still has to observe if there would be leaks on the pipe.

Maynilad earlier announced that the water supply would be resumed only today. But Lacuna said the water concessionaire might have put a "safety" on the schedule so as not to keep the residents’ hopes up then later disappoint them.

Lacuna was confident last Monday that Maynilad would be able to restore the water supply yesterday.

The MMDA was laying the foundation for a pedestrian footbridge project on Coastal Road and Roxas Boulevard when its contractor, Freyssinet, accidentally punctured a main water pipe.

Aside from the unscheduled water interruption, the incident also aggravated traffic in the busy road. – Nikko Dizon
