A room grow: Makeover magic

MANILA, Philippines - A young girl’s bedroom is her sanctuary; her own personal space where she could study, listen to her favorite songs, pursue hobbies, and hang out and chat with friends. It must be something that is a reflection of her lifestyle, taste, and need. This was the desire of the Magcaleng girls: Cheska, a college freshman; Gel, a high school student; and MJ who is in Grade 4. They had outgrown their room and wanted a place that has the right balance between playful and grown-up. Mommy Vicky agreed and so she wrote Real Living magazine.

“The whole house was quite uncoordinated to begin with,” Vicky said. “The bedroom was too plain and it was dark green all over.” When Real Living designer Kristine Neri saw the bedroom, she described it as “cluttered, cramped and not conducive for relaxing or studying.” Thus, with the help of Robinsons Department Store, the space was turned into a chic retreat for the girls.

The walls were splashed with aqua and white to make it bright and airy. These calming hues were the best choices that even 10-year old MJ could relate to it. “It’s so cool and cozy!” the three girls chorused. Light tan fabric blinds were put up to meld with the cozy mood.

To make the room fun and functional, Robinsons Department Store and Real Living provided practical and stylish storage for the girls’ papers, beauty aids, CDs, books, clothing, shoes, and stuffed animals. A sturdy storage with all their necessities cleverly adorns one side of the white walls. A wooden cabinet, also in white, houses some of their textbooks, memorabilia, and a calla lily on a glass vase to breathe a little more life into the room.

In place of the unattractive bunk beds are two single beds — one of which had a pull- out bed for MJ. Since the bedroom is more chic and orderly now, Mommy Vicky expects her girls to have guests in their newly-refurbished room for bonding, study groups, and chats.

One-of-a-kind accessories like a funky lampshade, wall clock, picture frames, bonsai plants, muira plants, Bon Art picture frames, Trendsetter beddings and Lark vase highlighted the room’s fresh and trendy theme. Aside from these, Robinsons Department Store also gave out lovely bedsheets, pillows, and comforters.

Neri said, “However nice the interior is, but when there are no accessories, the room lacks warmth.”

The space that used to be drab is now “dreamy.” Mommy Vicky was right. It was about time that her three angels had their own personal haven.
