Safer patient care in operating rooms

MANILA, Philippines - Medical accidents do happen. Worse, these incidents may result in death. In the US alone, 98,000 accidental hospital deaths occur every year, prompting innovations in medical technology for safer patient care, especially in operating rooms.

In the Philippines, HealthSolutions Inc. brings safe, trusted, and quality medical supplies, devices, and equipment to local hospitals and clinics. Its latest product, the Megadyne Mega Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrode, was introduced at the 35th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. (ORNAP) that carried the theme “Embracing a Culture of Safety in Perioperative Care.”

The Mega Soft Patient Return Electrode is a safe and self-contained electrical current limiting device that prevents patients from having damaged skin during electrosurgery procedures. It combines the Mega Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrode technology with an effective operating room table pressure reduction pad that lessens friction and shearing. This pad prevents the formation of bedsores and burn injuries associated with electrosurgery.

The Mega Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrode also answers the three major challenges faced by the OR management — patient safety, cost effectiveness, and waste disposal management. It helps management by improving patient care and cutting costs.

Because of its emphasis on safety during operations, the 35th ORNAP Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting served as the perfect venue to unveil the Mega Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrode. Perioperative nurses from all over the country witnessed the convenience and protection that the equipment can give to patients. ORNAP members lined up to witness the demonstration and look into other HealthSolutions supplies, devices, and equipment.

“With the Mega Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrode, procedures will be safer for both patients and practitioners. Since our product is also reusable, it brings in at least 70-percent savings for every operation,” says Melvin Melgar, HealthSolutions group product manager for medical supplies and devices. Aside from Mega Soft, Megadyne Medical Products Inc. from US has PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coated tips and cautery pencil minimizing eschar buildup. Hence, there will be savings on time and effort in scraping the pencil during electrosurgery.
