MANILA, Philippines – The kiwifruit boasts health benefits that are incredibly numerous for a brown fuzzy fruit. It has nutrients that can help fight off diseases, provide energy and is a convenient diet choice. The Zespri kiwifruit, a New Zealand delicacy, not only comes in the familiar bright green variety but also a sunny golden color speckled with tiny black seeds. The flavor is tangy, with just a hint of sweetness.
1. It’s kiwi-licious: Just cut it in half scoop out the flesh and enjoy the goodness anytime, anywhere. It’s best eaten raw and whole. Even the skin is edible and packed with extra vitamins, minerals and fiber.
2. Kiwifruit in the kitchen: Toss the kiwi in a blender for a fresh smoothie, mix it with yogurt for a healthy snack or dip in chocolate for a delectable indulgence.
3. Tender loving care: The kiwifruit contains the actinidin enzyme that makes it a natural meat tenderizer. Just cut it in half, rub over the meat and let it stand for about 10 minutes. Then cook, bake or broil your meat to tender perfection.
4. Zest up your meal: Add zing to your favorite grilled fish or chicken dish with this easy-to-make kiwifruit salsa. You will need one cup balsamic vinegar, 1 onion, finely chopped; one banana, peeled and chopped, two oranges (peeled, seeded and chopped); four Zespri green kiwifruit, peeled and chopped; and one big green chili, chopped.
Heat 1/2 balsamic vinegar in a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Slowly cook and stir onion until soft. Stir in banana. Use remaining balsamic vinegar as needed to keep the mixture moist. Stir in oranges, kiwis and green chili. Cook and stir until all ingredients are soft.
5. Kiwifruit, the kikay fruit: Make your own mask by mashing one fresh kiwi. Pour a cup of boiling water over and let it cool. Add 1/2 tablespoon of vodka. Make sure that the mixture is thoroughly blended. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes on your face before cleansing.
