Manila holds Amorsolo Day

MANILA, Philippines - The City of Manila declared May 30 as Fernando Amorsolo Day in honor of the late great National Artist. With this proclamation, the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation presents a series of activities in line with the maestro’s 121st birth anniversary.

A one-day on-the-spot painting session, “Ipinta ang Maynila,” was held at First United Bldg., Escolta St., Binondo, Manila, with the cooperation of the City of Manila Tourism.

In July, the National Museum will showcase Amorsolo’s unique works in portraiture along with a collection of his memorabilia that have never been exhibited before. Selected “Ipinta ang Maynila” pieces are also included. In other cities, a three-day free workshop will be facilitated by professional artists. By the end of the year, the foundation will launch a coffee-table book featuring portraits painted by Amorsolo. This will be the second title published by the foundation.

Proceeds from the series of workshops and activities are intended for the EPCALM Adult Leukemia Foundation of the Philippines. The foundation also hopes to raise enough funds to construct a museum. This will serve as a permanent repository for the memorabilia and paintings that are currently within the ancestral home under the care of the Amorsolo family.
