MANILA, Philippines — Two fishermen who were reported missing were rescued in the waters off Balayan, Batangas on Thursday night, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.

The PCG said the fishermen’s boat developed engine trouble as they were returning to shore at around 3 a.m.

Due to lack of communication equipment, the fishermen were unable to call authorities or their families about their situation.

After drifting for several hours, the fishermen were spotted at around 11:30 p.m. by their fellow fisherfolk near the coast of Barangay Anak Dagat in Lemery town.

Upon receiving the report, the PCG dispatched a vessel, which towed the fishermen’s boat to the shore.

“They were given medical attention and were found to be in good condition with no injuries,” the PCG said.

Authorities reminded fishermen to always carry communication and safety equipment before heading out to sea.

Meanwhile, the PCG’s “Libreng Sakay” program assisted and distributed food packs to 10,370 people trapped in floodwaters from Wednesday to Friday.

The agency deployed response teams to flood-prone areas to provide immediate assistance and ensure the safety of people in affected communities.
