Dennis Trillo on how he stays away from ‘temptation’

Dennis Trillo has admitted to having been flirted with and feeling flattered by it. However, he chose not to let the temptation win at any time.
“Perhaps, at first, it’s flattering, but if you think about the consequences of doing something that is wrong, then (in my case), I know it’s not for me. Ayoko na ng gulo kaya hindi ko pinapansin, Tito Boy,” said the Kapuso actor during his guest appearance on GMA 7’s “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.”
His wife, Jennylyn Mercado, must have been the envy of women for the kind of character the actor has as a better half. More than his good looks, Dennis is not one to give Jennylyn a headache or, worse, a heartache. He is 100 percent loyal to the woman whom he chose to marry and build a life with.
When one thinks of loyalty, the image of someone who doesn’t cheat or flirt easily comes to mind. For Dennis, it’s not only about what he doesn’t do. It’s also about what he actively chooses to do every day in ways people never notice.
“In the many years that we’ve been together, mula noon hanggang ngayon, wala naman kayong narinig na naging problema tungkol sa mga ganyan. So, perhaps I can say I’m 100 percent loyal.”
Dennis and Jennylyn’s love affair began in 2010 but ended a year later. They rekindled their romance in 2016, which led to their marriage in 2021. They have a daughter, Dylan Jayde, who is now four years old. Both have a child from their respective past relationships — Calix is Dennis’ son with former girlfriend Carlene Aguilar, while Alex Jazz is Jennylyn’s son with former beau Patrick Garcia.
Dennis stressed that he cannot afford to have a marital problem like infidelity, given his many roles, including being an actor, a father and a responsible, loving husband.
“I no longer want her to have any reason to be jealous. Kumbaga, sinisiguro ko na lahat ng kilos ko ay hindi niya pag-iisipan ng kahit na ano. Gusto ko secure ang utak niya, that she has peace of mind even if I do whatever (movie) scene. I want her to always feel secure with me.”
I asked him whether he thinks a man should give more love than a woman in a relationship. Dennis replied, “Feeling ko kailangan pantay. Kailangan sa lahat ng bagay, patas kayo. Hindi p’wedeng mas lamang ‘yung isa sa binibigay ng isa. It must be equal and fair to avoid conflict.”
Dennis equally displays loyalty as an actor. He recently renewed his ties with GMA, his mother network, where he has been for 23 years.
The actor expressed gratitude to GMA for his breakthrough and the wonderful opportunities he’s received over the past two decades. He truly sees GMA as “home.”
“Sila (management) ‘yung mga unang tao na nakilala ko na nagtiwala sa akin, nagbigay ng opportunity kahit na nagsisimula pa lang ako.
“Actually, I was a nobody, talagang walang name, when I started working with them, but they entrusted me with acting projects that came one after the other.”
He also acknowledged his stint with ABS-CBN before transferring to GMA and recalled how he reacted upon seeing the talent fee (TF) of the lead star of the “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK) episode, which was his last acting project with ABS-CBN.
“When I saw that actor’s TF of P15,000, I was amazed and began to wonder when I would have that kind of TF, because I think my TF then was less than P5,000. But it’s an experience that always humbles me because it serves as a reminder of how far I have come.”
With the many Kapuso soaps he has done in the past, Dennis couldn’t exactly name his Top 3 favorites because, according to him, his answers change every time he is asked about them. During our conversation, he mentioned “Mulawin,” “My Husband’s Lover” and “Maria Clara at Ibarra.”
What can he say about young actors who look up to him?
“Feeling ko mission accomplished ako doon because it means I’ve been doing a great job. Of course, it feels good that they see me as a role model, and it inspires me even more to give my best.”
