'Solo Leveling' gets first theatrical anime film

MANILA, Philippines — The story of Sung Jinwoo is far from over.
Crunchyroll and Aniplex have announced that "Solo Leveling: Beyond the System," the franchise's first theatrical anime film, is now in production.
The announcement was made during the Crunchyroll Showcase at Anime Expo 2026, where a teaser key visual and concept video were unveiled. Sung Jinwoo's English voice actor, Aleks Le, also appeared during the presentation to confirm the project's development.
The movie will pick up directly after the events of "Solo Leveling Season 2-Arise from the Shadow,” continuing Jinwoo's journey as the powerful S-Rank Hunter. Story details, however, remain under wraps.
Crunchyroll is co-producing the film with Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C Media and Kakao Piccoma. Returning to animate the project is A-1 Pictures, the studio behind the first two seasons of the anime and "Sword Art Online."
Based on Chugong's hit Korean web novel of the same name, "Solo Leveling" is set in a world where mysterious portals called Gates connect Earth to monster-filled dimensions. Humans known as Hunters battle the creatures lurking inside the Gates.
The story centers on Sung Jinwoo, once dubbed the world's weakest Hunter, who gains access to a mysterious System after surviving a deadly dungeon. The System allows him to level up beyond normal limits, transforming him into humanity's strongest Hunter.
The web novel, first published in 2016, was later adapted into a bestselling webtoon illustrated by the late Dubu of Redice Studio and adapted by h-goon.
The anime adaptation premiered in January 2024, followed by its second season in 2025. It went on to win Anime of the Year at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
The Japanese cast is led by Taito Ban as Sung Jinwoo, while Aleks Le voices the character in the English dub. They are joined by Makoto Furukawa, Haruna Mikawa, Daisuke Hirakawa, Rebecca Wang, SungWon Cho and Ian Sinclair.
No release date has been announced for "Solo Leveling: Beyond the System."
Industry reports also indicate that a third season of the anime is expected to premiere later this year, although no official release window has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the "Solo Leveling" universe continues to expand beyond anime. Netflix previously announced that it is producing a live-action Korean drama adaptation of the global hit series, which is expected to premiere in late 2027. The series will star Byeon Woo-seok as Sung Jinwoo and Han So-hee as S-Rank Hunter Cha Hae-in.
