Maynilad to cut water bills in Q3 on peso strength

From AB Capital's The Opening Bell: Three Moves

Event

Maynilad Water Services announced that water bills are likely to decline in 3Q26 as the stronger peso reduces the cost of its foreign currency-denominated obligations, resulting in a lower Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment (FCDA). The FCDA is a pass-through mechanism that reflects changes in forex movements on concession-related debt and is adjusted quarterly.

View

We view the development as modestly positive for the regulated water utilities sector. While the tariff reduction itself does not materially alter Maynilad's earnings outlook, it reinforces the defensive nature of the business model and highlights the benefit of peso appreciation on companies with foreign currency exposure. The announcement may also improve public sentiment toward utilities at a time when household budgets remain under pressure.

Catalyst

The stronger peso provides immediate relief to consumers through lower tariffs and may help temper inflationary pressures at the margin. For Maynilad, the impact on earnings should be largely neutral since FCDA-related forex adjustments are generally recoverable under the regulatory framework. However, lower customer bills could support affordability and collection efficiency, particularly amid a challenging consumer environment.

Action

Maintain positive view on MYNLD and MWC. The key investment drivers remain volume growth, tariff rebasing outcomes, non-revenue water (NRW) reduction initiatives, and continued expansion of the regulated asset base. We would use any weakness related to near-term tariff adjustments as an opportunity to accumulate positions in the sector.
