Senate set to hold necrological service for JPE

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate will hold necrological services for the late senator Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday, according to Senate President Vicente Sotto III.
Speaking to dwIZ radio yesterday, Sotto said Enrile’s family has agreed to a necrological service with a few Senate members chosen to deliver eulogies for the veteran politician.
The Senate will also pass a resolution honoring Enrile’s life ahead of the Nov. 19 memorial, Sotto said.
During the 19th Congress, the Senate adopted Resolution No. 225 “honoring Enrile for his untiring service and contributions to the country and the Filipino people,” which credited the veteran politician’s years of service as a lawyer, lawmaker and government executive, spanning the administrations of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sr., Corazon Aquino, Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno Aquino III and Rodrigo Duterte.
“The Philippines’ political history will not be complete without him,” Sotto said of his predecessor. “He will be written about by scholars from his birth and for years to come.”
Sotto said he considered Enrile a “mentor,” as they worked together for a long time, even serving as his majority leader during the 15th Congress.
Enrile was Senate president from 2008 to 2013. He passed away on Thursday at 101 years old.
