Pope appoints Bohol bishop as apostolic nuncio to European Union
MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis has appointed 65-year-old Bernardito Auza, an archbishop from Bohol province, to become the next apostolic nuncio to the European Union.
CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), reported that Pope Francis announced Auza’s appointment last Saturday.
He will succeed Archbishop Noël Treanor, who died of a heart attack in August 2024 at age 73.
Auza will continue to serve as apostolic nuncio to Spain and Andorra until he assumes his new role at the EU in Brussels, Belgium in the coming weeks.
The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) welcomed Auza’s appointment, praising his “remarkable legacy of diplomatic engagement and ecclesial service.”
“For decades, he has played a pivotal role within the diplomatic service of the Holy See, demonstrating profound commitment and vision,” said Bishop Mariano Crociata, COMECE president.
Auza is from Talibon town in Bohol, and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Tagbilaran in June 1985. A year later, he was incarnated to the newly created Diocese of Talibon.
