MANILA, Philippines — Thirty-one people were injured after two buses collided along the EDSA Carousel in Guadalupe, Makati on Monday night.

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the accident occurred when a bus rear-ended another bus that had stopped after a motorcycle crossed the center island of the Metro Rail Transit-3.

Eight passengers from the first bus and 23 from the second bus suffered injuries.

The driver of the second bus told probers that his brakes failed, causing the crash.

Emergency teams responded to provide first aid to the victims. Some of the injured passengers were taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The accident caused traffic congestion along EDSA Orense, prompting other Carousel buses to use the other lanes to continue their routes.

Meanwhile, 12 motorcycle riders were injured on Monday after skidding on a mud spill along the EDSA Kamuning flyover in Quezon City.

The MMDA said mud spilled from a dump truck carrying sand, making the road slippery.

Emergency responders from the MMDA provided first aid to the motorcycle riders.

Following the incident, the northbound lane of the Kamuning flyover was closed, including a portion of the EDSA busway, causing traffic jams that reached White Plains.

The truck driver said he was transporting filling materials from Pasig to Pampanga, but rain had turned the sand into mud, which spilled after the truck’s tailgate safety lock opened.

Police took custody of the truck driver. He may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to property.
