MANILA, Philippines — The Southern Police District will deploy 821 police officers to ensure peace and order during the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Marcos on July 22.

In a statement on Friday, the SPD said police personnel underwent a two-day refresher course on civil-disturbance management (CDM) operations, aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills in handling civil disturbances.

Police officers have also been practicing the eight basic CDM formations for effective implementation of crowd control measures during significant events, according to the SPD.

“This initiative is crucial in ensuring peace and order during SONA 2024 and in preventing any injuries or harm to demonstrators exercising their freedom of speech,” the SPD said.

“The SPD is committed to (carrying) out their duties to maintain public order and safety during the upcoming SONA 2024 with utmost professionalism and respect for human rights,” it added.
