MANILA, Philippines — Multinational cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned that online phishing scams are circulating in Threads, the new microblogging platform launched by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta.

“The prevalence of scams surrounding the popular Threads app serves as a stark reminder of the risks we face in the digital realm,” Kaspersky security expert Olga Svistunova said in a statement.

Svistunova reminded the public to “adopt a skeptical mindset” and prioritize cybersecurity measures.

“By staying cautious amidst the allure of trendy topics, we can fortify our defenses and navigate the digital landscape with confidence,” she added.

Fraudsters have developed phishing pages that mimic the Threads website, tricking users to input their login credentials and eventually gather personal details including their banking information or credit card details, according to Kaspersky.

Threads Coin, a fictitious service, was also developed to trick users into purchasing it using cryptocurrency.

Kaspersky recommends being cautious when downloading software, verifying the software’s website, using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, being wary of suspicious links or emails from unknown sources and using a reliable antivirus software to stay protected.
