MANILA, Philippines — Senatorial candidate and retired Philippine National Police chief Guillermo Eleazar yesterday vowed to provide more livelihood opportunities for solo parents in the country.

The plight of solo parents is difficult, given that they need to solely provide for the needs of their family aside from balancing their time between taking care of their children and earning for them, he said.

“With the help of local government units (LGUs), solo parents should be given opportunities to earn even if they are based at home or while they are taking care of their children. There shall be a proactive office in each LGU that will assist every solo parent with their concerns,” Eleazar said in a statement in Filipino.

The office for solo parents should give them seminars and trainings for possible additional sources of income and livelihood, he added.

The LGUs, according to Eleazar, are the ones that would be able to help solo parents because they are the ones that see their plight.

“There should be enough funds for projects that would benefit solo parents,” he said.

Eleazar said the proposed measure that he would push will also mandate the Department of Labor and Employment and even the Department of Trade and Industry to strengthen their livelihood and employment assistance to solo parents.
