MANILA, Philippines — Amid political controversies, First Lady Liza Marcos thanked the “loyalists” who never left her husband, President Marcos during “his lowest.”

In a post on Instagram on Friday, Liza said: “They say you’ll only know who your real friends are when life knocks you down.”

“For all the LOYALISTS who stood by my husband when he was at his lowest, my sons and I will forever be grateful. Your kindness, love and unwavering support gave us strength when we needed it most,” the First Lady said.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being our light during those difficult times,” Liza said in her social media post accompanied by photos with the President and their supporters.

This was the first time the First Lady issued a statement following the attacks of the President’s ally-turned-arch critic Vice President Sara Duterte against their family and the administration.

In an interview in Quezon last month, Marcos said he is not closing his doors on his erstwhile political ally despite their worsening relationship reaching its lowest point when the Vice President claimed to have hired an assassin to kill him and the First Lady.

Meanwhile, at a press conference in Zamboanga City, Duterte declared that nothing can mend the strained relations between her and Marcos, which have reached “the point of no return.”

Marcos had opposed calls to impeach Duterte, saying it would not help the Filipino people.
