MANILA, Philippines — The repair of the damaged Otis Bridge in Manila will take about nine months, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said yesterday.

The 60-year-old bridge was closed due to damage on its girder and concrete deck.

“We will work 24/7. We will closely monitor the contractor to make sure they will work non-stop,” said engineer Melvin Navarro, DPWH National Capital Region director.

Public Works Secretary Mark Villar gave the same assurance last Tuesday.

Navarro believed that the damage on the bridge was caused by the heavy trucks that regularly cross it.

The DPWH official said the repair of the bridge is urgent considering that there are informal settlers living underneath.

He assured the public that the new foundation of the bridge to be built will be a stronger one.
