Business groups back people’s initiative vs dynasties

MANILA, Philippines — Business and civil society organizations yesterday expressed support for the ongoing people’s initiative to put an end to political dynasties that have hindered the country’s development.
“We, the undersigned organizations, urge all Filipinos to join the Dapat Isa Lang People’s Initiative, read the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act and sign the petition,” the groups said in a joint statement.
The statement was issued by the Management Association of the Philippines, Justice Reform Initiative, Energy Lawyers Association of the Philippines, FEU Public Policy Center Foundation Inc., Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Institute of Corporate Directors, Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran Inc., Move As One Coalition, Movement for Restoration of Peace & Order, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and Shareholders’ Association of the Philippines.
“For nearly four decades, Congress has failed to fulfill the constitutional mandate against political dynasties. Enough waiting. It is time for citizens and communities across the country to act together,” they said.
The groups cited a Supreme Court ruling that directed Congress to urgently enact an anti-political dynasty law.
In its ruling, the SC found that 39 years of inaction equate to grave abuse of discretion.
“The message was clear: this constitutional command cannot be set aside forever,” the groups said, adding that political dynasties do more than limit voters’ leadership choices.
“When a few families dominate politics, voters have fewer real choices. Accountability weakens.
New leaders struggle to break through. And when connections seem to matter more than merit, public confidence and investor trust suffer too,” the groups said.
They said the issue also affects justice, democracy and access to opportunities.
“A fairer politics rewards ability, effort and service – not family name,” the groups said. They called on citizens to do their part to bring change.
Under Republic Act 6735, a people’s initiative to enact national legislation must obtain signatures from at least 10 percent of registered voters nationwide and at least three percent of registered voters in every legislative district.
As the campaign needs to reach every corner of the country, the groups called on citizens to help by joining and sharing the petition.
“The promise of equal access to public service will not fulfill itself. Citizens need to show up, sign and help others understand what is at stake,” the groups said.
They also called on citizens to encourage others to do the same.
“Public office is a public trust – not family property,” they said.
