Classes suspended due to 'Ruby'

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) and several local government units suspended classes from Thursday until Friday due to super typhoon "Ruby" (international name "Hagupit").

Classes in all levels are suspended in the following:

  • Almeria, Biliran
  • Cabucgayan, Biliran
  • Caibiran, Biliran
  • Culaba, Biliran
  • Naval, Biliran
  • Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Tacloban City
  • Catbalogan, Samar
  • Naval State University
  • University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College
  • Visayas State University

Meanwhile, the DepEd reminded the public of its rules on the automatic suspension of classes due to tropical cyclones.


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has placed under public storm warning signal number 1: 

  • Biliran
  • Dinagat
  • Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Northern Samar
  • Siargao Island
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration earlier released a list of critical areas due to the typhoon.

Typhoon Ruby entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday.
