NZ PM postpones Phl visit, sends typhoon aid

Pia Lee-Brago - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has postponed his official visit to the country, citing concerns it would cause “undue pressure” on the government at a critical time of the relief and recovery for victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Key, who was scheduled to visit the country on Nov. 20 to 22, announced the postponement of his trip on Wednesday, adding that they are deploying Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft to carry emergency supplies and provide transport support to relief efforts.

New Zealand has pledged NZ$2.15 million or P77.2 million in humanitarian assistance and NZ$2.3 million or P82.3 million to augment relief supplies for the Philippine Red Cross.

President Aquino and Key earlier had a telephone conversation during which the Prime Minister conveyed his country’s sympathies and condolences to Yolanda victims.

Aquino thanked Key for his message and the humanitarian support being provided by New Zealand.

On Tuesday, Key led a motion in the New Zealand House of Representatives to express support for the people and the government of the Philippines, solidarity with those waiting for news about friends and family and condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the aftermath of Yolanda.
