Owners urged to secure pets during floods
MANILA, Philippines - Pet owners were asked yesterday to secure their pets in case their homes become flooded.
In a statement, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said animals must not be tied, caged or confined in any way as they will be trapped and unable to flee rising floodwaters.
“If your house has a second floor, ensure animals have access to that floor so they can escape rising floodwaters,†read the statement.
PETA said animals must not be left to guard homes without food or water, or in danger of being caught in floodwaters.
“If you’re able to evacuate with animals, place small animals in secure cages, and keep dogs leashed,†read the statement. “Frightening sounds and unfamiliar surroundings may make them bolt. Take water and food bowls, your animals’ favorite toys or blankets, a towel and enough food for at least a week.â€
PETA asked the public to be on the lookout for stray animals that neighbors have left behind.
