Many employed Pinoys seek better jobs — study

MANILA, Philippines - A study conducted by Jobs.DB.com, an on-line recruitment website, revealed that many of the jobseekers in the country are actually employed, but are looking for better employment.

Sheryll Tiburcio, JobsDB.com Philippines acting manager, said the survey showed that even those who are employed continuously search for better employment.

“We learned from the survey that Asians, including Filipinos, explore employment opportunities all the time at any place,” Tiburcio said.

She said the study undertaken in the Philippines and five other countries in Asia indicated that many clients of job portals are employed persons who may be bored with their current jobs or looking for better jobs and salaries.

“Based on the survey, particularly in the Philippines, 82 percent of the jobseekers are actually just exploring and only about 27 percent are actively looking for jobs,” Tiburcio said.

She added the results of the survey indicated that even those who are settled in their current jobs still keep an eye on the market though they are not ready to actually apply for other positions.

JobsDB.com embarked on the study in the last quarter of 2012 in a bid to understand the needs of jobseekers.

The same study showed that jobseekers have access to information and the challenge for them at this time is how to filter the data.

“Job search has also become much easier as most or 87 percent of the jobseekers now prefer job portals, while 25 percent use mobile in their hunt for employment,” Tiburcio said.

She said the results of the survey paved the way for their company to re-launch their brand and enhance their services.

Tiburcio said more than 60,000 job openings are currently available on their portal.

Included in the job openings are 22,000 vacancies in information technology and engineering, 17,000 in sales and customer relations services, including BPOs, and more than 8,000 in human relations and administration.

She said 25,000 companies in the Philippines post job vacancies in their site.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported that at least 180,000 jobs are available for the youth in the country.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the government Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) is projected to provide employment to about 180,000 students nationwide.

She said the program benefited more than 130,000 students in 2012.

Baldoz said that those interested to avail of the program, especially this coming summer season, should ready their documents and check the Bureau of Local Employment’s website at http://ble.dole.gov.ph/.
