Kuwaiti envoy’s aide held for gun possession

MANILA, Philippines - A bodyguard of the Kuwaiti ambassador was arrested in Makati on Saturday after he failed to show police papers exempting him from the election gun ban.

Filipino Noel Aspa, 31, a bodyguard of Kuwaiti Ambassador Waleed Ahmad Al-Kandari, was carrying a 9mm Norinco pistol with a magazine loaded with 15 bullets when police arrested him at the Greenbelt 5 mall in Makati.

Makati police chief Senior Superintendent Manuel Lukban said Aspa’s  application for exemption from the gun ban was still with the Commission on Elections when he was arrested.

Security guards stopped Aspa, an employee of Accuria Executive Protection and Detective Services, at the entrance to the mall, he added.

Lukban said Aspa, who entered the mall ahead of the ambassador, was asked to surrender his pistol, but he refused.

At that point, the guards radioed two nearby policemen for assistance, he added.

Aspa was also not wearing the uniform for security personnel as the Philippine National Police had prescribed, Lukban said.
