DSWD pushes implementation of Solo Parents' Act
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is pushing for the full implementation of the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act and the approval of the proposed amendments to the law.
DSWD Region 3 director Adelina Apostol said the department continues to extend assistance to solo parents, but additional benefits should be given to them to cope with solo parenthood.
Apostol called on the senators to consider their proposed amendments to Republic Act 8972 or the Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000.
The House of Representatives earlier passed House Bill 6184 amending RA 8972.
“We would like to emphasize that although the provision of discounts on basic commodities, school supplies, vitamins and medicine for minor children of solo parents will be very much appreciated, we are also after equal access to employment and educational opportunities,” Apostol said.
Apostol said the law should likewise include a provision that a certain percentage of positions in government agencies and private companies should be allotted to qualified solo parents.
Carrie Javier, president of the DSWD-Central Office Solo Parents’ Support Group, said RA 8972 will help solo parents gain access to educational opportunities, including scholarships and short courses provided by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
“Through the law, solo parents can also avail of the seven-day parental leave, in addition to the regular leave privileges,” Javier said.
The DSWD is conducting a survey to determine the actual number of solo parents nationwide. To date, the number of solo parents surveyed in Regions 1, 3, 7 and the National Capital Region is 21,173.
