MANILA, Philippines - Disease experts yesterday warned New Year revelers that ignoring minor cuts and burns from firecracker blasts could cost them their lives.
Dr. Eric Tayag, Department of Health (DOH) chief epidemiologist, said revelers should see a doctor and get anti-tetanus shots before infection sets in.
“Public should be warned not to neglect their injuries from fireworks regardless of severity. When the injured person has difficulty opening the mouth and swallowing, then tetanus has already set in,” he noted.
Tetanus is an illness caused by tetanus bacteria, which thrive and live in soil, saliva, dust and manure. The bacteria can enter the body through a cut or burn. The infection is characterized by locking of the jaw, making it difficult for the patient to open his mouth and swallow. When this happens, the patient can die from suffocation.
Tayag said the incubation period for tetanus is usually three to 28 days so those who acquired injuries and burns during the New Year should still get anti-tetanus vaccination.
Dr. Arturo Cabanban, director of the DOH-run San Lazaro Hospital, said injured revelers should not wait for infection to develop before seeing a doctor.
Cabanban said that while tetanus is reversible at times, it is more costly to treat than prevent.
“The gun powder used in manufacturing pyrotechnics is dirty so if you got injured or if you sustained burns from firecracker blasts, it is better to get anti-tetanus shot which can cost some P5,000 to P10,000,” he told The STAR.
He added that this amount is relatively small considering that treating a patient with tetanus would cost at least P20,000. – Sheila Crisostomo
