MANILA, Philippines — Director Antoinette Jadaone praised singer-songwriter Rico Blanco for working on her latest film "Sunshine" as a composer, his first time scoring a full-length feature.

Fellow filmmaker Quark Henares fielded questions on X, formerly Twitter, to ask the "Sunshine" team led by Jadaone on his "Endslate" podcast.

One user pointed out that Blanco's score was not being talked as much before asking if the music used by the titular character, played by Blanco's ex Maris Racal, in her artistic gymnastics routine was original.

Henares initially responded saying that the music was "original but inspired," attaching a clip to The Chemical Brothers' "Elektrobank," then Blanco replied he was inspired by electronic music in general.

"Hardly used pegs for 'Sunshine.' More of convos [with] Jadaone re; characters, intentions, goals. Big idea was to add modernity and youth to the story," Blanco explained.

The singer added he had roots in the electronic genre, citing examples like Kraftwerk, Orbital, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

"Though I love this track, it totally wasn't on my radar then. This is more 90s Big Beat," Blanco said of "Elektroabnk" before thanking Henares.

The director praised Blanco for the score he made, especially in the portion of the film where Racal's Sunshine decides to change tracks.

"You could really feel her transformation," Henares said, leading to another message of gratitude from Blanco.

Jadaone reposted Blanco's initial response to Henares and shared it was the singer's first time to score a full-length film.

"Sunshine" stars Racal as the titular young rhythmic gymnast who dreams of joining the national team but she finds out that she was pregnant days before her tryout.

Co-starring with Racal are Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Jennica Garcia, Annika Co, and Meryll Soriano.

The movie made its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, two months after Racal confirmed her split with Blanco.

The film won the Crystal Bear at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) last February before finally screening in Philippine theaters last July.
