MANILA, Philippines — John Estrada and McCoy de Leon are cool with essaying the “most-hated characters” in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo as PO1 Rigor Dimaguiba and David, respectively. They play father and son roles who detest Coco Martin’s lead character Tanggol in the Kapamilya series.

“Because we are actors, if you are called for that kind of role and maraming nag-react na nagagalit sayo, it means that you are effective as an actor,” stated John in a press conference. “I mean, I don’t want to be typecast na ganun parati (in acting roles), but just because it’s Coco, he is the main actor.

“I’m not gonna be plastic in saying that I will do this para sa lahat ng bida ko (co-actors). Of course, because we are actors and I’ve been in the industry for quite a while, I have the right also to choose kung sino yung pagka-kontrabidahan ko. And I believe in Coco’s vision.”

Coco also served as one of the directors aside from portraying the lead actor in the said show.

“I will no longer spill the details of Rigor’s journey but, definitely, as what Coco has said, ‘Kuya John, whether you are kontrabida or bida, lahat ng characters dito may puso.’ And that is true,’” he shared.

So he entrusted his character to Coco’s direction. “If you were to ask us, sa lahat na maging proyekto namin, if si Coco Martin kasama namin, we are OK with it.”

Likewise, McCoy “enjoyed” playing the “bad guy” in the series. “It’s a different flavor. It’s not the same (with my previous roles),” he commented.

On being the villain in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, he is actually “happier” to be given such a role. He said, “Mas natutuwa ako siguro because I (am) able to do my part well…” But his parents’ reaction to his character as David said otherwise, he shared, “My parents in real life would say, ‘I thought (your character) is nice.’ Hindi! I like this (role), mommy. Hahaha!”

McCoy considered the series as “once in a lifetime” and that it has “impacted his acting career and real life.”

“I still study it (acting),” he asserted. “Of course, with the help of direk Coco.”

He admitted that he was “nervous” during the first week of taping. “We were in the same table with Ms. Charo (Santos-Concio), Sir John and Ms. Pie (Cherry Pie Picache). Yun yung dapat sabi ko hindi pwedeng yun at yun lang ang mabibigay. Kailangan merong kakaiba. May iba.”

On his viral scene where he was beaten up by Coco’s Tanggol, he said, “Natutuwa pa ako nung binubugbog ako ni Kuya Coco. My head hurts but, hindi, si Kuya Coco ‘to.”

“I like what I’m doing (acting). I think that’s the key. Nasa puso mo yung ginagawa mo and you enjoy it,” he added.

Meanwhile, John and McCoy were recently embroiled in controversies regarding their respective personal lives. They were tight-lipped when they were inquired about the issues.

“Hindi ko pwedeng i-ano yan kasi pribado kong buhay yun although I’m a public figure. Of course, this is my life. Meron man akong sagutan, sa pamilya ko sa mga taong mahal ko. That’s it,” John simply commented when asked about his marital issues with wife Priscilla Meirelles.

“Hay naku wala. Basta ‘wag lang… As long as my wife and kids are OK, OK na ako dun,” he also said.

On the other hand, McCoy reacted when asked how he and partner Elisse Joson are doing following the brief breakup and reconciliation shortly after. He begged off from talking about it, explaining: “Sa amin po siguro, let’s leave it private for now… Yung pribado na muna.” He reiterated how “private” and “peaceful” their lives are now.

(FPJ’s Batang Quiapo airs on weeknights at 8 on Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, TV5, iWantTFC, and Kapamilya Online Live on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. The show is also available to viewers in and out of the Philippines on iWantTFC, while viewers outside of the Philippines can watch it on The Filipino Channel on cable and IPTV.)
