Ryle doesn’t really mind being called Mama’s Boy

When Ryle Santiago showed up at the Oriental Palace (on Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City) for the renewal of his contract as endorser of Cherub Baby Care products, he was asked by the movie writers about his love life.

“It’s rainy season at basang-basa ang paligid,” he said in jest, “pero heto ako, tuyong-tuyo, dry na dry.”

As always, Ryle was accompanied by his mom, Sherilyn Reyes, and this time by his stepfather Chris Tan who acts as Ryle’s manager.

Ryle is 20 and, according to Sherilyn, he is old enough to make decisions about his lovelife. Last linked to Kapamilya star Kira Balinger, Ryle is now close to Kapuso star Pauline Mendoza who is his co-endorser for another brand. His relationship with Kira never prospered because, admitted Ryle, some people around Kira didn’t approve of it.

“If that’s the case,” added Ryle, “I respect that. Ayokong maging hadlang sa future niya.”

And because he’s close to his mom, Ryle is described as a Mama’s Boy but he doesn’t mind.

“I always kiss my mom, I always say ‘I love you’ to her and to my dad. I still ask permission from them if I have to go out. I still play with my younger sister. We are so bonded as a family that we still stay in one room to watch movies, to eat and to sleep if the opportunity allows it.”

Since he grew up with his stepfather starting at age three, Ryle wants to have his surname changed (legally) to Tan. But Chris said no in respect to Ryle’s biological father, Junjun Santiago (the brother of Rowell, Raymart and Randy), from whom his mom is separated (marriage annulled). Ryle has Chris’ name tattooed on his arm.

...with stepdad Chris Tan and Aileen Choi-Go, vice president of Megasoft which is the maker of Cherub Baby Care products being endorsed by Ryle.

“That is so that he would know that even if I can’t carry his name because of some issues, that tattoo shows how proud I am to be his son.”

It is said that when Ryle was seven years old, Chris wanted to legally adopt him but the Santiagos frowned on it.

“I want him to use Santiago in all his documents, including his passport,” said Chris.

Known as a member of #Hashtags (the dance group organized and popularized by It’s Showtime), Ryle is making a name as a solo artist. After being named New Movie Actor of the Year for his performance in the indie film Bakwit Boys by the 2019 Star Awards for Movies by the PMPC (Philippine Movie Press Club). He recently delivered a head-turning performance as a soldier in the Medalya episode of MMK (Maalaala Mo Kaya), holding his forth beside co-star Joshua Garcia.

“I want to try varied roles,” said Ryle, “even as a kontrabida.”

As a singer-songwriter, Ryle has written three songs (ranging in genre from pop to country to rock) about love and heartbreak, arranged by his brother Lorenz Tan. The plan is to launch the songs on It’s Showtime. He hopes to collaborate with Janine Berdin, Rico Blanco and IV of Spades.

Eventually, Ryle would like to direct a movie (and follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Pablo Santiago), that’s why he’s taking up Film at Meridian International (MINT) College where he is a junior.

Incidentally, Cherub is right down Ryle’s alley. He’s the perfect endorser for the product because of his “cherubic” aura.

“Ryle has a bubbly personality, always happy, optimistic and perky,” said Aileen Choi-Go, vice president of Megasoft, maker of the Cherub products. “He projects exactly the image that Cherub is known for. He’s the embodiment of what we are looking for, someone who keeps a happy balance between being a celebrity and a student. He’s the inspiration to all students nationwide as we aim to reach our 100th school for Megasoft’s School is Cool advocacy.”
