MANILA, Philippines - Regine Velasquez defended new singers, explaining why they often sound like their favorite performers.
This was after she was told during the press conference of their upcoming concert "Royals" how Angeline Quinto sounded like her when she was new in the industry.
"Gano’n talaga kapag nag-uumpisa ka, gagaya ka talaga. Kasi you have no idea at first kung anong sound mayro’n ka, e," Regine said.
She even set herself as an example, saying she sounded like her idol Whitney Houston when she was starting out. Eventually, she was able to find her own sound after producing her own songs.
"After a while, she had her own songs, so parang nagkakaro’n na siya ng sarili niyang identity, sarili niyang sound," she said about Angeline, who has been in the industry for five years now. "Habang tumatanda siya mas malalaman niya pa ang sound niya."
The Asia's Songbird doesn't believe that anyone can inherit the title of an icon in the industry.
"Wala naman talagang pumapalit. Wala naman pumalit kay Sharon Cuneta, si Sharon pa rin naman," she said, citing as an example Megastar Sharon Cuneta.
"We make our own mark in the business. If we ever decide to leave the business, nando’n na ang mark mo. So I believe that Angeline will do the same," she concluded.
Regine will have a concert with Martin Nievera, Angeline Quinto and Erik Santos titled "Royals," which will happen on February 13 at SM Mall of Asia Arena, and on February 14 at Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.
