Fans to get dropped inside the horror of 'The Walking Dead'

Associated Press

ATLANTA — Organizers of a convention devoted to "The Walking Dead" are unveiling an immersive attraction meant to make fans feel like they are in the fictional world of the hit television show.

The production was premiering Friday at the 2015 Walker Stalker Con at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta.

"The Walking Dead Experience-Chapter 1" drops small groups of audience members into more than 10,000 square feet of sets and special effects designed to emulate the fear and chaos of the AMC television show, organizers say.

Tickets start at $60 plus fees, and participants can pay more for professional makeup or prosthetics and roam the set as a "walker."

The production follows the show's story lines, beginning the night the outbreak hits.

"We've heard the fans' desire for more immersive and terrifying experiences at our events. 'The Walking Dead Experience - Chapter 1' is the response to that desire!'" said James Frazier, the executive producer of the project.

Visual artist Michael Counts, a pioneer of immersive theater, created the production.

The attraction is "the scariest and most fully transportive production of this type ever made," Counts said in a statement.

After this weekend's convention, "The Walking Dead Experience-Chapter 1" is scheduled to move to a nearby Atlanta location for a four-week run before a national tour.

Future productions can incorporate different elements of "The Walking Dead" storyline.

"Though the experience is designed so that each episode can stand alone, the structure of the concept follows the expanding story framework of The Walking Dead comic books, TV show and video game series," the convention planners said in a statement.
