WATCH: After 'Heneral Luna' success, Gregorio del Pilar biopic now in the works

MANILA, Philippines — It's official: The sequel to the hit historical movie "Heneral Luna," a biopic about Gregorio del Pilar, is now in the works.

The announcement by film producer Ed Rocha was made during the thanksgiving part for "Heneral Luna" on Thursday. "We are keeping the promise; Del Pilar is coming," Rocha said.

ABS-CBN star Paulo Avelino will play Del Pilar in the said movie, which is slated to be released after two to three years.

This comes after the unprecedented success of "Heneral Luna," which stars John Arcilla and is directed by Jerrold Tarog.

"Heneral Luna," Rocha said, now holds the record as the country's top grossing historical film and the top grossing independent film.

In previous interviews, Tarog said "Heneral Luna" is intended to be part of a trilogy, with movies about Del Pilar and Manuel Quezon next in the pipeline.

Avelino played Del Pilar and GMA-7 actor Benjamin Alves played Quezon in the movie.
