MANILA, Philippines – Antoinette Taus says she is over portraying good girl roles.
Since she made a comeback in the local scene last year, she has been portraying characters with strong personalities.
The actress, for instance, played Rizzo in the 2014 local production of the stage musical "Grease" and portrayed one of the antagonists in the ABS-CBN drama "Bridges of Love."
Now, in the upcoming rerun of Resorts World Manila's stage musical “Bituing Walang Ningning,” Antoinette will play the iconic villain Lavinia (alternating with theater actress Cris Villongco).
“I’ve been portraying good girl roles my whole life,” she said in a recent interview. “I guess in real life I’m kind of out there, aggressive, go-getter. So I guess it comes naturally to me baka napo-portray ko ‘yong strong roles a bit better. “
She added that portraying kontrabida roles is easier for her since “ang dami mong puwedeng gawin na iba’t ibang atake.”
Antoinette admits feeling pressured to portray the role of Lavinia in the “Bituing Walang Ningning” rerun. The said role was originally played in the 1980s movie of the same name by Cheril Gil and was later portrayed by Angelica dela Cruz in the ABS-CBN 2006 TV adaptation.
Despite this, she reminds herself “not to pattern my style after any particular person or actor.”
“I think I take a look at the big picture and I kind of digest everything and tell myself how I’m gonna put myself on that person’s shoes,” she explained.
She also gets inspiration from her “diva” idols who she believes “have reasons why they act in certain ways, and they probably got there because they have that really strong and aggressive personality.”
“Bituing Walang Ningning” will run starting October 8 at the Newport Performing Arts in Resorts World Manila, Pasay City. Tickets are now available at TicketWorld, TicketNet and the Resort’s World Manila Box Office.
