What The STAR and Susan Roces have in common

This time in the past 27 years, Susan Roces has been figuring prominently in the pages of this paper — for a good reason. She shares a birthday with The STAR which is celebrating its 28th anniversary today while she is turning, well, 70-plus years younger.

Here’s a pictorial tribute to Susan, courtesy of Funfare’s “other beauty expert” Celso de Guzman Caparas who has been faithfully monitoring Susan’s “regal” journey:

Susan is the only showbiz female star to be crowned Queen or Reyna the most number of times in the ‘60s: 1963 Miss Philippine Movies, 1964 Queen of Philippine Movies, 1965 Queen of Stars, 1965 Reyna ng Pelikulang Pilipino and 1966 Miss Show Business.

As 1965 Queen of Stars, Susan received a crown and trophy, house and lot, a brand-new bantam car and home appliances. She was crowned by 1960 Miss International Stella Marquez de Araneta.

In 1959, Susan was crowned Muse of the Sampaguita Family Club (Gloria Romero was “it” the previous year) and she was escorted by Luis Gonzales, Juancho Gutierrez, Romeo Vasquez, Jose Mari, Greg Martin, Tito Galla, Eddie Gutierrez, Jose Morelos, Lito Legaspi and Ramon Torres. All of them were bachelors; married men were not allowed to be escorts.
