Animation sequels

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Animation films have been gaining so much popularity these past years. It turns out now that they are not only for kids but actually for all ages. Thanks to the creative works of filmmakers, now everybody gets to enjoy animation. What’s more is that there are sequels to look forward to. Here are some of the well-loved animation sequels:

Shrek (three sequels). At first, Shrek was living a solitary life, then came Fiona whom he loves so much, next came the little ogres, after that, someone from the past came back for revenge; and of course, the story even gets more fascinating with all the citizens of Far Far Away. Life seems to be getting more and more colorful for Shrek.

Madagascar (two sequels). Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria are tired of their life being in the zoo. They tried to escape with the help of the smart penguins. Just when they think that life outside the zoo is easy, they get themselves into an adventure that will test their friendship and their wild instincts — which they may have lost already. As the sequels continue, their adventure becomes harder. Where is home for them?

Cars (one sequel). Obviously, this movie is about cars but what makes it special is that these are cars that talk and have lives. Step into the world of Lightning Mc Queen, Doc, Mater and other vehicles as they go on about their lives without any humans around. Who says cars don’t have lives? Not this movie. It is such a wonder how creative filmmakers can get; not only that, there’s almost always a life lesson to learn.

Toy Story (two sequels). One of the most creative storylines in all the animation films, Toy Story is a sure favorite of many, especially toy lovers. The film brings life to toys, centering in the friendship of Woody (a cowboy toy) and Buzz (a spaceman hero toy). Together with the other toys, they go through being wanted, being bought, being played and finally being passed on or, worse, being dumped.

Monsters, Inc. (one prequel). Sulley and Mike, together with the other monsters, have the most unique job of all — that is to make the kids scream. The prequel tells the story way back the time when the monsters were still in university. Remember when elders would say “beware of the monsters in the closet” to scare children, well, the film makes it less scary now or not at all.

Kung Fu Panda (one sequel). Believe in yourself, this is the main lesson that one can learn from the movie. The first part is about reaching for one’s dream, while the second one is about confidence in one’s self. It is always nice to watch animation that  imparts lessons in life. It somehow becomes not only for kids but also for adults.

An American Tail (three sequels). The first film was shown in 1986. It is about a mouse named Fievel who is from Russia. Together with his family, they migrate to America. Fievel’s adventure begins when he gets separated from his family. Only one sequel was released in theaters, the other two were direct-to-videos.

Ice Age (three sequels). Come and join Manny and his friends as they live and survive the ice age. It can be touching, it can bring laughs and most of all, it can be a sure entertainment for the family. The film and its sequels brought warmth to the cold and frozen ice age period.

The Lion King (one sequel—direct to video). A film from way back 1994, The Lion King was a sure a memorable animation film. The story and the soundtrack were a hit to the viewers. Although the sequel didn’t make it to the big screen, fans made sure that they get a hold of it so that they can follow the story. It’s a touching movie that deals with real-life situations.

Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs (one sequel). It’s funny how the movie shows how scary food can be, especially when it’s overflowing and people start to get greedy. When Flint invents his special machine, he has no idea that it will create such trouble. The sequel even has bigger trouble. Make sure you eat before watching the film.
