Maricel in comedy comeback with Eugene in Momzillas

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Maricel Soriano said yes to a comedy role in what may be considered her movie “comeback” after a brief respite from the big screen, in Star Cinema’s next offering, Momzillas, directed by box-office director Wenn Deramas from a story he himself co-wrote with Keiko Aquino.

Like Eugene Domingo, with whom she’s making a movie for the second time (the first was in Regal Films’ Bahay Kubo in 2007), Maricel plays a mother to the hilt with the same comic impact she was noted for during her early years.

“Masaya ito,” said Eugene who looks up to Maricel as “my idol.”

Maricel and Eugene co-star with Billy Crawford and Andi Eigenmann as lovers set to get married. However, there’s one stumbling block: Their mothers (that is, Maricel and Eugene) are against it. The two moms are revealed to be mortal enemies because in their younger years they fell in love with the same man.

“Riot ito,” said Maricel who added that, after doing drama both on TV and in film, doing comedy is a welcome breather.

The young lovers hatch a plan to reconcile their feuding moms. The tragedy: The mothers get lost in a remote island where they are forced to work together and settle their issues if they have to survive. They do become friends again. What they don’t know is that their children are on the brink of separation, so what next?

Direk Wenn has handled Eugene in several films but it’s the first time he’s working with Maricel whom he looks up to as one of his favorites comediennes, along with Eugene.

“It’s a dream team,” confirmed Wenn. “Two super-comediennes, na magaling din sa drama, in one movie. What more can I ask for?”
