A musical marathon for Mother Earth

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - On April 28, the biggest street party music tribute will happen at the 9th Ave. in Boni High St., Bonifacio Global City as we celebrate this year’s Earth Day Jam.

Earth Day Jam, the musical marathon for Mother Earth, now on its 12th year, shows no signs of slowing down as it starts at 6 p.m., with guitar donning, drum-beating music ambassadors of Mother Earth in various genres as diverse as world music, alternative, rock, reggae and acoustic. Kicking off the festivities are salsa-samba El_Martinos drumbeaters whose performance segues to the Philippines’ premier Brazilian-fusion artist Nyko Maca with band Gafeiera.

These will pave the way for an exciting journey of various musical performances from folk guru Noel Cabangon to the reggae laced set of PeacePipe, an internationally renowned group who has won several awards abroad including Artist of the Year from Zim Carib radio in New Zealand. The pop-rock set will be dominated by women-fronted bands Imago and jazz Pinoy soul quartet, Sino Sikat.

The rock-alternative scene, on the other hand, will bring in Kjwan, Mayonnaise, Radio Active Sago Project with frontman Lourd De Vera along with veteran artist-producer Lou Bonnevie. Boni High St. regular habitués are out to get a dose of modern ’60s with Bloomfields and the ’80s babies will reminisce with True Faith’s long list of hits from Perfect to Huwag Na Lang Kaya.

Nina and Juris will dish out their hits while pledging to Mother Earth on breaks while pop-novelty act Tanya Markova delivers its string of hits including the fave Picture Picture. All these music are interspersed with environmental tips from various speakers representing “green” NGOs and various leading government agencies. Splashes of AVPs and environmental music videos will also dominate the video screen as bands perform.

Spearheaded by Philippine rock icon, Father Satur Neri recipient Lou Bonnevie and musicman Toto Gentica with their production outfit Dimitri Productions, Earth Day Jam has grown to become the highly anticipated musical phenomenon it is today, raising comparisons to other Unity through Music type concerts such as Woodstock and Live Aid. Whatever the case, the talent-packed one night marathon of music and advocacy is sure to continue making waves in both the environmental and musical scene.

Earth Day Jam 2012 is presented by DENR, Earthday Network Philippines, Local Gov’t. of Taguig and the BGC group.
