Human League, Carlisle & Jones relive the music of the '80s
MANILA, Philippines - The ultimate ‘80s music assault is on hand this concert season when Human League, Howard Jones and Belinda Carlisle bring to Manila a vault of more than 20 hits among them from the era when “heaven was a place on earth,” and people lived life in one day “together in electric dreams.”
Set for Smart Araneta Coliseum on Oct. 10, 8 p.m., the mega back-to-back-to-back concert will feature ’80s diva Belinda Carlisle’s Mad About You, I Get Weak, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Leave A Light On, Shot In The Dark, I Feel The Magic, Vision Of You, Circle In The Sand, and Summer Rain; and songs when Carlisle still fronted for super girl group, The Go-Go’s, including Head Over Heels, Turn To You, We Got The Beat, Vacation, and Our Lips Are Sealed.
Then there’s electronic wizard Howard Jones who stunned the UK and US music scene three decades ago with such synthpop masterpieces as Life In One Day, Things Can Only Get Better, Everlasting Love, What Is Love, New Song, You Know I Love You…Don’t You, Lift Me Up, and the worldwide No. 1 ballad, No One Is To Blame. The quintessential music hero who straddled the fine line between New Wave and pop is admired even by music lovers from other generations, who regard Howard’s work as constitutes a defining moment in pop music history.
And who among their generation doesn’t know Human League’s Together In Electric Dreams? Though officially credited to Human League frontman Philip Oakey and Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, Human League performs the anthemic song all the time and is even part of their Greatest Hits album.
One of the most recognizable songs from the ’80s that almost always makes compilation albums of that circa, Together In Electric Dreams is actually the theme from the movie, Electric Dreams (1984), which, in itself, is considered a classic in the league of Weird Science and Pretty In Pink.
But, it’s not as if Human League is a one-hit wonder. Expect to hear during their Manila concert their other smash tunes as the trans-Atlantic charttopper Human, and Don’t You Want Me, (Keep Feeling) Fascination, Lebanon and Mirror Man. Note that Human League is also a progenitor of the New Romantic fashion movement so bring out and dust off those androgynous clothing and mismatched sneakers (tip: guys can wear eyeliners to complete the look) and see you at the show.
The one-night-only concert by Human League, Belinda Carlisle and Howard Jones in Manila is being presented by Ovation Productions and Smart in cooperation with ETC, 2ndavenue, Universal Channel, Jack TV and The Rockwell Club. The media partners and other sponsors are The Philippines Star, Business World, Monster Radio RX 93.1, 97.9 Home Radio, Mellow 94.7, 105.1 Crossover, MYX Music Channel, Optima Sign Solutions, RJ 100 and Top 40 T-shirts.
