Rising group endures 3-day stop-motion video shoot

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Eight-piece, shock pop band Tanya Markova is living up to its billing, dressing themselves up as fairy-tale characters in their new music video for their second single Disney. The video’s stop motion concept, defined as an animation technique that makes physically manipulated objects to appear moving on their own, added to the challenges the band members had to endure, having shot the video for three days when most videos are shot in just a day.

While clay figures are often used in stop motion work, the Markova members themselves served as the objects during the shoot, posing in whatever way directors King Palisoc and Oden Fernandez would tell them. ”It’s not easy to be manipulated. To have the patience to lie down for say, five hours, is amazing. Masarap katrabaho ‘yung grupo,” shares Fernandez. With an average of five frames per second filling up a four-minute song, the video, utilizing a DSLR instead of the common video camera, appears well-thought and carefully staged. Shares vocalist Norma Love, “Na-excite kami sa concept at mas na-challenge kami kaysa sa previous effort namin.”

Tanya Markova, a signed artist of MCA Music, entered the scene with much hype, debuting with Picture Picture and surprising listeners with an album that mixes pop, rock, new wave, and dark metal. The members, who wear clownish make-ups, feel satisfied putting some “dark factor” into their music, with Disney being an example of their soft-sounding tracks with sprinkles of dark messages. When asked if they’d ever thought of putting a celebrity in the video, the directors argued, “No need. ‘Yung banda mismo may personality na.”
