MANILA, Philippines - Who would have thought the R&B Prince would soon prove his mettle as consummate TV host?
Within just a month, Jay-R did that and more during his baptism of fire as host of GMA 7’s reality dating show, Take Me Out. The Fil-Am singer has earned critical acclaim for his hosting, thus pulling up the show’s nationwide non-prime and late-night ratings.
According to the latest TNS National TV ratings from June 1 to 4 (posted on www.pep.ph on June 7), Take Me Out earned 11.9 percent, 12.5 percent, 12.1 percent and 14.3 percent, besting closest competitor PBB which posted 11.2 percent, 11.6 percent, 12.6 percent and 13.7 percent for the same respective days.
The show also rates just as well in its replay slot from 12 to 12:30 a.m., edging out competitors in the late-night rankings.
The dating game’s slow but steady ascent coincides with the latest twists and unexpected turns of events that leave viewers glued to their seats, rooting for their bets and getting a kick out of watching romantic sparks fly between the winning couple.
A hefty chunk of the show’s success can be credited to Jay-R, who has been enjoying his newfound role playing Cupid among the loveless and lovelorn.
He breezed through expected start-up glitches and birth pains, but after hurdling the initial month, he’s found his groove. Jay-R seems more confident with his Tagalog diction, although a wider vocabulary could afford him more leeway to get even more intimate with televiewers.
His good looks and fresh, youthful appeal have proven to be an asset in winning the hard-to-please teen market, and his relaxed, easygoing vibe makes him an engaging host.
Jay-R admits being buoyed by positive feedback from friends and fans. “The ratings are an entirely different ballgame,” Jay-R admits. “Of course, it’s always encouraging to know we’re making headway in that department, but what’s more important to me is that we make it fun for everybody on the set.”
“Admittedly, Pinoys are very romantic at heart,” Jay-R shares, “And somehow, they always feel some sort of connection to contestants. Bottom line is, they always look forward to that time when love blooms — even among the most unexpected times and places.”
