They all happened in summer

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It’s summer time once again. Outings, trips abroad and workshops are just some activities people get busy with during this season. There are just so many things that can happen in one summer. In the movies, it’s pretty much the same—one summer could change a person completely—just like the following movies that have to do with summer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer. One summer, a group of friends were driving along and accidentally ran over a man. They believed that the stranger was dead, so they threw his body. They swore never to tell anyone and decided to just go on with their lives. It never occurred to them that their summer will never be the same again.

My Girl. Vada (Anna Chlumsky) and Thomas (Macaulay Culkin) are best friends. They do things together: bike riding, playing, walking along the lake, and many more. In short, they are already used to having each other around especially during the summer. Unknown to them, they only have one last summer to be together. How will they cope with this?

How to Make an American Quilt. Finn (Winona Ryder), engaged to be married, is a graduate student finishing her thesis. She decides to spend the summer and work on her thesis at her grandmother’s place where she meets a group of old women who makes quilts. As a wedding gift, the group decides to make a quilt for Finn since her grandma is a member of the group. As they make the quilt, they tell stories about their lives. After hearing their stories, Finn starts to think about her life and the road she’s about to take.

American Graffiti. Just before summer ends, four guys are determined to do the things they have to do before going to college. Each tries to ease the pressure of the coming school year, since they are college freshmen. Will they spend the last days of their summer wisely?

Grease. Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny (John Travolta) fall in love one summer and thought that it would end as the season ended. But their story continues and becomes complicated when both of them attend the same school. Danny has a reputation to keep in school, while Sandy struggles with her new life in school and her role in Danny’s life. Will their one-time “summer love” become a real one?

Dirty Dancing. Baby (Jennifer Grey), a shy and innocent girl, belongs to a conservative and well-to-do family. Her life is about to change as she and her family join a summer camp. Here, she meets Johnny (Patrick Swayze), a dance instructor. Will the family accept the change that will happen to Baby? This movie perfectly goes with its, to-dance-for theme song.

Jaws. It’s summer! As expected, people flock to beaches to enjoy the sun. This is also the time when beach resorts profit greatly. That is why Amity Island officials won’t allow its closure even if a giant white shark is preying on anyone who goes in the sea. What they thought of as an easy-to-control predator is not that easy to deal with, after all. Will Amity Island be safe again?

Stand by Me. This film is based on Stephen King’s novel The Body.. It is about a writer who rekindles his past with his three friends. As boys, they were adventurous and curious. By the end of one summer, they went on an adventure to find a dead boy’s body. This strengthened their friendship and made them discover more about life.

A Summer Place. This 1959 film is about romance the second time around in a not-so-ideal situation. Ken (Richard Egan) and Sylvia (Dorothy McGuire) were former summer lovers who ended up unhappily married to other people. Twenty years later, they meet again in the island where they had their summer love. Seems a second chance for love is about to happen. Will it be right this time?

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Lena, Tibby, Bridget and Carmen are best friends. They’ve been together since they were kids. One summer, for the first time, they were to part ways. Lena is bound for Greece; Tibby stays at home; Bridget joins a soccer camp; and Carmen is heading to South Carolina. To remind them of one another while on vacation, they pass along a pair of pants which they bought and amazingly fits them all.
